Photography Tip: Beauty in the Everyday

alicepark)EVERYDAY

Often times, we forget to document the everyday magic that brings out the fondest childhood memories.  On this week’s #AskAliceShesNice, I’m sharing simple tips on seeing the beauty in the everyday.

I believe the most authentic moments happen when we’re able to step back and make ourselves unaware to our subjects.  This image was taken at Lyon’s 4th birthday party a few weeks ago, and I believe it captures the essence of that morning.  There were a lot of boys, a lot of toys, and a lot of imaginative, child-like play.  The commotion of that morning (simultaneous events happening at once, lots of moms/dads/babies everywhere) did not hinder these boys from discovering a chest of construction trucks and losing themselves with them.  Our wonderful associate photographer silently crouched beside them and captured their play.  They didn’t even realize she was there.
If we open our eyes and be still amongst the commotion of everyday life, we’re able to see moments like this happening.  These are the photographs that excite me the most and bring about the most real and vivid childhood memories.  I encourage all of you to be silent and to be patient.  Allow the moments to happen organically, and be ready with your camera in-hand when they do.  They will be beautiful.
Canon Settings:  Canon 5D MkIII, 35mm 1.4L, shot outdoors at ISO 400, f/2.8, at 1/8000th midmorning on an overcast day.
